Shops Fined Up to AED 200,000; Raids to be Intensified
EHS Seizes 2,000 Units of Prohibited Drugs and Sex Stimulants
Dubai, Unite Arab Emirates − EHS, the Environment, Health and Safety regulatory arm of Trakhees - Ports, Customs and Free Zone Corporation (PCFC), seized and confiscated more than 2,000 units of unlicensed and prohibited drugs and sex stimulants.
During inspections in a commercial center in Dubai carried out last week by EHS in co-ordination with Dubai Police, the Ministry of Health and Dubai Municipality, 10 outlets were found to be selling prohibited herbs, pills and drugs in addition to alcoholic beverages. One of the outlets was ordered closure and the others were fined for amounts varying between AED 50,000 to AED 200,000. The accused persons were handed over for interrogation.
EHS said that inspections of pharmacies and commercial outlets being carried out by its officers will be intensified in the coming days. Heavy fines will be imposed and tough action will be taken against those who use their firms for purposes other than what is specified in their licences, it warned.
EHS also stressed that it is essential to find out how such illegal materials reach the shops whose owners are willing to do anything to make quick profit. The regulatory body warned that such activities, which violate all rules and regulations, are detrimental to social health and safety.
It is the lack of public awareness and the way pharmacies and outlets withhold from customers details about the side effects that lead to the increasing use of such drugs, EHS added. The customer is left with no ways to take action in case of serious complications.
EHS said that it will expand its awareness campaigns concerning the sale and use of drugs, and reminded pharmacies and shops of serious consequences if they engage in any activity contrary to what they are licensed to do. It called upon authorities to impose more severe punishments against those who endanger the health and safety of families and the society.
