AFDC | NGOAFDC Launches New Youth Project
By the Association of Forests, Development and Conservation

Beirut, Lebanon The Association for Forests, Development and Conservation (AFDC) has launched an innovative youth project entitled “Towards the Implementation of the Youth Declaration on Environmental Policies” in cooperation with USAID.  This project aims to enable youth leaders to work on an environmentally sustainable project through scientific research, experiments and open dialogue.  It is the continuation of a 2007 AFDC youth project, by which young leaders studied and published their recommendations for Lebanese environmental policy.

This study will measure the level of air pollution that ordinary citizens are exposed to in Beirut, Tripoli, Zahle and Sidon.  Working with the chemistry department at the American University of Beirut (AUB), the students will produce a map illustrating their findings.  Participating youth come from a number of universities from across Lebanon’s regions.

The young leaders involved in this project will also participate in workshops designed to give them the skills to raise environmental awareness on their campuses.  As such, they will conduct awareness activities for other students based on the results of the study they complete and the map they produce.  They will also advocate for changes in environmental policy to regional and national leaders.
