Galway, Ireland - It was always hard for me to talk about Palestine; there are many reasons behind that. I do comprehend the fact that in every story, in every conversation and in every conflict there exist the “two sides of the coin” phenomenon. In the case of Palestine, I do not believe so. I try my best to spare myself from entering into a debate about right and wrong, past and present, Palestine and Israel, because I know for a fact that no matter what I say or how much I try, in a best case scenario, I will not get anywhere. I am not capable of categorizing this state of mind or putting a title for it, but I think I can associate it most closely with living in denial. People nowadays like to take the easy way out in everything, even if that entails consciously lying to themselves. That is precisely what acquiring a state of denial is about. You remind them of historical events. They ignore them. You show them facts and figures. They refute them. You provide pictures and documentaries. They do not believe in them. And then, to clear out any guilt for non-reflex from their conscience, they throw one of those typical, unfounded clichés on you: “You are biased. You are anti-Semitic. You are one-sided. Does Lebanon Really Need the World Trade Organization?

Toronto, Canada - The idea behind the World Trade Organization (WTO) was to create a world where global trade could help achieve shared prosperity, but nearly a dozen years after its inception, the WTO continues to help out its advocates − the United States of America and the European Union. Instead of aiding the developing world, the WTO hinders their growth potential, neglects their environment, and impedes on food safety standards across the globe. Through its shameless promotion of global trade, the WTO has put the interests of multinational corporations above the rights of citizens and nation states, and rather than representing a positive force for reducing inequality in the global economy, it is done quite the opposite, an outcome Lebanon will soon discover if caution is not taken.
