Bleeding
By Jamil Beiruty, Contributing Writer
Beirut, Lebanon − Have you ever wondered why we are still alive? Did you come up with a realistic analogy of one’s existence? If so, then you are amongst the finest breed of optimists.
My own life is a testament of survival between supernatural forces of nature: Destiny versus coincidence versus commotion in constant motion.
I am bewildered by the king-sized blanket of ignorance ordained by a bunch of war lords turned into shrewd present political leaders, who dare to speak up in the name of the Lebanese people. I will not name these politicians, whose criminal actions speak as loud as their speeches, chanting for peace, democracy, freedom − and yes, even independence. How independent are the Lebanese or how democratic is the current political system that governs every aspect of our lives? It is simply pathetic to believe such rhetoric and I call for all politicians to undergo a lying test in an attempt to distinguish truth from deceit. The people are eager to live within a politically healthy and economic viable state.
It is been way overdue for all Lebanese citizens who claim to love their land and cherish the dignity of their ancestors to make lasting peace with past conflicts. No political party or religious group has the right to speak in the name of the majority. In fact, we, the Lebanese people, ought to take pride in our power to exert pressure over politicians because we are the majority, and they are the minority of war mongers, who came into power by force. If you believe in pride, dignity and nationalism, then let us throw away a bunch of hypocrites in oblivious past, throw the key of oppression and forget about them. In essence, a Lebanese democracy never existed nor would it ever thrive amidst the status quo.
In the twenty-first century, the power is for the people and by the people. I would say for those skeptical minds: Do not be overwhelmed by the counter ideas nor should you ignore the brainwashing effects of political media or imported byproducts of Western civilizations. Rather, please think of the consequences, of past historical evidence. So think about the absence of real and fair democracy as opposed to the demonizing forms of anarchical rule. Think about the new generation who aspire to live and thrive in an ambitious world of opportunities. Think and think again − then act accordingly.
